“This music will move you, groove you… and funk you up!!”
Tony Baglio, host of New Orleans Grooves on WICN radio

As you might expect, Bruce Mattson’s latest collection of original music spends plenty of time celebrating his love for New Orleans Rhythm & Blues. But there’s lots more to listen for!

On Vintage Modern, Bruce includes some stylistically interelated pieces that bring vibrant colors and fresh new textures to his latest musical canvas. Cases in point: a B3 instrumental titled “J Train” that uses groove to tell the story of the early relationship between two of his former bosses, Gregg Allman and Jaimoe. With “Electric Rodeo Jam”, Bruce pays tribute to the high-energy, jazz-infused stage jams of Earth, Wind and Fire. The churchy gospel ballad “While the River Rolls By”, which features the expressive sax work of Jim Allard and drop-dead gorgeous supporting vocals of Becky Bass, provides some sweetly introspective emotional contrast. And there’s still plenty more to explore!

11 Tracks in total.

Qualified

Forged in friendship, Qualified is a celebration of the unique melting pot of cultures, characters, and sounds that is the city of New Orleans. The album is a collection of twelve iconic NOLA funk and R&B tunes that have been staples of the Mattson Medeiros Band’s live shows for decades.

Available on all download and streaming platforms.

Willie J Laws Jr.

Bruce contributed a number of songs to this album, and plays piano and Hammond B3 throughout. “Deep Deep Well” may or may not be directed at the 45th President of the United States. Bruce brought the finished lyric to “Good Blood After Bad” to a rehearsal, and the band co-wrote the music. “Last Prophet…” was written from pages of notes Bruce had collected about Willie’s life story.

Jon Butcher

Bruce plays piano on the New Orleans R&B-style track “Kalena”, and Fender Rhodes on the deliciously psychedelic “Senor Garcia”. He also wrote and played piano on the gospel blues ballad “Make a Little Room”.
